Imagine this: you are been stranded in the desert, dying of thirst, lips parched, and desperately needed water. You see a building in the distance and it takes everything you’ve got to crawl on your hands and knees across the hot sand until you get to the building which is a “GENERAL STORE“. As you crawled in the store, the proprietor comes from around the counter and you croakthe first building that you found and pleaded for “WATER”…what would your response be if the storekeeper asked:
“What kind of water would you like”? the store owner asked.
“I have tap water, mineral water, spring or glacier water, sparkling water, distilled water, purified water, flavored or infused water, alkaline water, and well water….which would you like”?
When you are dying of thirst, desperate for some water to drink, you are not really choosy…you will take almost anything!
However, if asked that question later after you have refilled, recuperated and had time to consider all the choices, your answer might be a specific TYPE of water.
Same way with referrals; what kind of referral would you like to have?
If you haven’t gotten any in the past month….any kind will probably do!
If you have a steady stream of quality referrals your “eyesight” is probably a little different. You want “QUALITY” not “QUANTITY“.
That way you don’t have to work with cheap, pain-in-the-butt clients who don’t want to pay you for your time, knowledge, and skills.

What is a good referrals for your business?
Sorry, they are not “EVERBODY“. (I hear that all the time).
If you are a carpet cleaner a good referral could be a young family, kids, dogs, that entertain and consistently need carpet cleaning services.
Real estate agent? Couples downsizing; growing families; newcomers moving to the area; real estate investors, etc.
If you could twitch your nose like Samantha on Bewitched or Jeanne, who just popped out of the bottle, who would be your IDEAL referral?
If you can’t describe it in a couple of sentences…. you can never fully find it!
In the words of Jerry Maguire “Help me help you”!
Getting referrals is like finding money on the ground!
